Teen Patti Gold: Rules, Hand Rankings and Real Probabilities
Teen Patti Gold is a card game built on the classic three-card Indian game. Most guides stop at "deal three cards, highest hand wins". This one goes further: exact odds for every hand, the mathematics behind blind and seen betting, how side show actually resolves, what changes between app versions, and the current legal status of money play in India. It also could be played for real money.
Written for players who want to understand the game rather than memorise slogans. Last reviewed: July 2026.
Teen Patti Gold, Teen Patti and the Clones: What Is Actually What

Search results mix three different things under one name. Confusing them is the reason players download the wrong file or expect features that do not exist in their build.
Name |
What it is |
Where it lives |
Teen Patti (classic) |
The traditional three-card game played with a physical deck. No publisher, no version numbers, rules vary by household and region. |
Offline, any 52-card deck |
Teen Patti Gold |
A published social title with virtual chips, multiple rooms and tournament modes. Chips carry no cash value. |
Google Play, App Store |
Third-party clones |
Unrelated apps reusing the name and gold-and-red visual style. Different code, different rule variations, no shared account. |
APK sites, unofficial mirrors |
Practical consequence: an account created in one of these is not an account in the others. Progress, chips and friend lists do not transfer between them, and support from one publisher cannot help with another's build.
The Rules: Deal, Boot and Betting Order

A round of Teen Patti runs in a fixed sequence. Every table variation is a modification of this skeleton.
1. The boot. Before any cards appear, each player contributes an equal minimum stake to the pot. This is the boot amount, and it sets the scale of the entire round. The current stake begins equal to the boot.
2. The deal. Three cards face down to each player, dealt one at a time clockwise from a shuffled 52-card deck. No jokers, no community cards, no draw. What you receive is what you play.
3. Choosing a status. Before acting, a player is either blind (has not looked at the cards) or seen (has looked). This choice determines what that player pays for the rest of the round, and it can only move one way — blind to seen, never back.
4. Betting. Play moves clockwise. On their turn, a player either puts chips in to stay, or folds and forfeits everything already contributed. A blind player pays one or two times the current stake. A seen player pays two or four times it. The current stake updates as play continues.
5. Ending the round. A round finishes in one of two ways. Either every player but one folds, and the survivor takes the pot without showing cards, or two players remain and one pays for a show. At a show, both hands are revealed and the higher hand takes the pot.
6. Ties. When two revealed hands are identical in rank and value, most rule sets award the pot to the player who did not pay for the show. Table rules vary here, so it is worth checking the specific room before it matters.
Most tables also apply a pot limit or a maximum number of raises before a show becomes compulsory. Without such a cap, two blind players could in theory raise indefinitely.
All Six Hands and Their Exact Probabilities

All Six Hands and Their Exact Probabilities
A three-card hand is drawn from 52 cards, which gives 22,100 possible combinations. Every hand type can therefore be counted precisely rather than described as "rare" or "common".

The anomaly nobody explains. In poker, rarity determines rank — the harder a hand is to make, the more it beats. Teen Patti breaks that rule at the very top. A pure sequence occurs in 48 combinations, a trail in 52. The pure sequence is genuinely rarer, yet it ranks second. The hierarchy here is inherited from tradition, not derived from probability, and this single fact settles most arguments new players have about hand order.
What the numbers mean at the table. Roughly three hands in four are nothing but a high card. A pair arrives about once every six deals. Everything above a colour together accounts for under 5% of hands. Any expectation built around premium holdings is built on something that shows up once in twenty-five rounds at best.
Where the totals come from: 22,100 total hands, minus 52 trails, 48 pure sequences, 720 sequences, 1,096 colours and 3,744 pairs, leaves 16,440 high-card hands.
Blind and Seen: The Cost Difference Explained

Blind play is usually presented as a matter of nerve. It is actually a matter of price, and the price gap is fixed by the rules rather than by style.
Status |
Minimum to stay |
Maximum raise |
Blind |
1× current stake |
2× current stake |
Seen |
2× current stake |
4× current stake |
The consequence. A blind player pays exactly half of what a seen player pays to remain in the same pot. With an identical chip stack, a blind player survives roughly twice as many betting rounds as a seen player at the same table. That is the whole of the blind advantage, and it is purely economic — the cards are no better.
Where the advantage disappears. It holds only while the player stays blind. The moment the cards are viewed, the doubled rate applies immediately and everything spent at the blind rate is already in the pot. It also disappears when the pot grows: once the current stake has been raised several times, half of a large number is still a large number.
The trade-off. A blind player is paying less for the privilege of knowing nothing. A seen player is paying double for information. Neither is correct in the abstract — they are different prices for different positions, and the table's raise pattern decides which one is worth paying.
Side Show: Conditions and Resolution

Side show, also called backshow, is the most misunderstood mechanic in the game. It is a private comparison between two players that removes one of them without revealing anything to the table.
Who may request it. Only a seen player, only on their own turn, and only after placing the required bet for that turn. A blind player cannot request a side show and cannot be asked for one.
Against whom. Only the player who acted immediately before — never a player across the table, never a choice of opponent. That previous player must also be seen.
When. Not in the first betting round. At least one full round of betting must have completed, so that there is a previous seen player to ask.
How it resolves. The requested player either accepts or declines.
Response |
Outcome |
Accepted |
Both hands are compared privately. The lower hand folds immediately. The rest of the table sees only that someone left the round, not what either player held. |
Accepted, hands tied |
The player who requested the side show folds. Asking carries the cost of losing ties. |
Declined |
Nothing is compared, no one folds, and play continues normally to the next player. |
Note that declining is public information of a kind — every player at the table sees that a request was refused, even though no cards were shown. Rule sets differ on the tie outcome and on whether refusals are limited, so the specific room's rules take precedence over any general description.
Teen Patti Gold Old Version: Why People Look for It

"Old version" is one of the most searched phrases around this game. The motivations are consistent, and so are the results.
Reason given |
What actually happens |
Preferred the older interface |
The interface does roll back with the build, but this is the only reliable outcome of downgrading. |
Smaller download and install size |
Older builds are smaller, though the gap is usually tens of megabytes rather than a transformation. |
Device runs an older Android version |
A legitimate case. Older builds target lower API levels and may install where the current one refuses. |
Expecting different game behaviour or removed restrictions |
Does not work. Game logic, matchmaking and account rules are enforced server-side and do not change with the client. |
The main limitation. Online titles authenticate the client against the server. Once the protocol moves forward, older builds are refused at login regardless of whether they install successfully. A downgraded client typically works for a short period and then stops connecting entirely, with no way to roll the server back.
Security cost. An old build carries every vulnerability patched since its release. On a device that also holds messaging apps, photos and banking software, running a knowingly outdated networked application is a poor trade for a preferred menu layout.
If the goal is genuinely an older Android device, the store itself will offer the last compatible build automatically. That path involves no third-party file at all.
APK Downloads: What to Check Before Installing

APK mirror sites dominate results for this game, and almost none of them describe what installing their file involves. The risks below are specific and verifiable rather than general warnings.
Modified client code. A repackaged APK has been unpacked, altered and re-signed. Whatever was inserted during that process runs with every permission the app holds. Nothing about the icon, name or interface will indicate that the code differs from the original.
Excessive permissions. A card game needs network access and storage. It does not need SMS access, contact lists, accessibility services, call logs or the ability to install other packages. Any of these in the permission list is a reason to stop, not a formality to accept.
No security updates. Sideloaded packages do not receive store updates. The build stays frozen at whatever version was downloaded, including its known vulnerabilities, indefinitely.
Account consequences. Publishers detect modified clients server-side. The usual result is a permanent account ban, which takes with it any progress, purchases and chips accumulated on that account.
How to verify a package. Compare the signing certificate of the downloaded file against the official build using apksigner or a signature-viewing tool. A mismatch means the file was re-signed by someone other than the publisher, and no other check matters after that. Also compare the package identifier — a clone under a different identifier is a different application entirely, regardless of what the store listing name says.
The straightforward alternative is the official store listing, where signature verification, update delivery and refund handling are all handled without any manual step.
Teen Patti Gold Real Cash: Current Legal Status in India

Searches for real cash versions of this game are still frequent, and most pages answering them are years out of date. The legal position changed decisively in 2025 and 2026.
The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 was passed by Parliament in August 2025 and received Presidential assent on 22 August 2025. Together with the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Rules, 2026, it came into force on 1 May 2026.
What the Act prohibits. It imposes a nationwide ban on all online money games — defined as games where a user pays or deposits money in the expectation of winning money. The ban covers offering such games, facilitating them, advertising them, and processing the associated payments. It applies extraterritorially to operators based outside India.
The skill argument no longer applies. The Act explicitly removes the long-standing legal distinction between games of skill and games of chance for this purpose. A game does not become permissible by being classified as skill-based.

Enforcement. The Rules established the Online Gaming Authority of India under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, drawing representatives from several ministries. Offences under the Act are cognizable and non-bailable, carrying imprisonment and substantial fines.
Pending litigation. Constitutional challenges to the Act have been consolidated before the Supreme Court and remain undecided. No stay has been granted, so the Act and Rules are in full effect while those petitions are heard.
What this means for players. The social version of Teen Patti Gold, played with virtual chips that carry no cash value, falls within the permitted category. Any platform currently offering Teen Patti for real money to players in India is operating outside the law, whatever its stated jurisdiction. Anyone reading this page for information about cash play should treat that as the answer.
Common Mistakes in Reading Teen Patti Hands

Five disputes account for most arguments at the table. Each has a definite answer.
1. Sequence versus colour. A sequence beats a colour. This surprises poker players, where a flush beats a straight. The counts confirm it: 720 sequences against 1,096 colours, so the sequence is the rarer hand and ranks higher.
2. Is the ace high or low? Both. A-K-Q is the highest sequence and A-2-3 is the second highest, ranking above K-Q-J. The ace works at either end, but not in the middle — Q-K-A and A-2-3 are valid, while K-A-2 is not a sequence at all.
3. Comparing two pairs. The pair itself decides first, not the total. A pair of nines with a two beats a pair of eights with an ace. Only when both players hold the same pair does the third card, the kicker, matter.
4. Identical pairs, identical kickers. The hands are equal in value. Suits do not break ties in Teen Patti. The tie is resolved by the show rule of the table, which in most rule sets favours the player who did not pay for the show.
5. Three cards of one suit are not automatically strong. A colour is the fourth-ranked hand out of six and appears in roughly one deal in twenty. It loses to every sequence, every pure sequence and every trail. Suited cards feel significant and are statistically ordinary.
Frequently Asked Questions

What is the rarest hand in Teen Patti?
The pure sequence, at 48 combinations out of 22,100, or 0.217%. The trail is slightly more common at 52 combinations but ranks higher, which is an inherited convention rather than a mathematical rule.
Does a blind player have an advantage?
Only a cost advantage. A blind player pays half the amount a seen player pays to stay in the same pot, which means more betting rounds from the same stack. The cards themselves are dealt identically.
Can I request a side show against any player?
No. Only against the player who acted immediately before you, only if both of you are seen, and only from the second betting round onward.
Is Teen Patti Gold available for real money in India?
No. The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 has prohibited all online money games nationwide since 1 May 2026, including games classified as skill-based. Social play with virtual chips remains permitted.
Should I download an APK from a third-party site?
There is no benefit that outweighs the risk. Repackaged files run modified code with full app permissions, receive no security updates, and typically result in a permanent account ban when detected.
Will an older version of the app keep working?
Usually not for long. Client versions are validated server-side, so older builds are refused at login once the protocol advances, regardless of whether they install correctly.
Does the highest card decide when nobody has a pair?
Yes, then the second card, then the third. High card is by far the most frequent outcome at 74.389% of hands.
Is the game suitable for all ages?
No. Card games of this type are intended for players aged 18 and over.
